I ran across this message board completely by accident and thought I'd make a contribution, though you might not see it because you posted quite a while ago.
We're related. My great grandfather was William (Willie) Mayo, known to all of us as Daddy Mo though he died before I was born. He spent his life in Holly Grove married to Jessie. Three daughters - my grandmother, Louise, and my great aunts Wilsie and Gertie. Gertie died just a few years ago in Tucson, AZ, leaving daughter Clare and son John and their children. Louise had two daughters, my aunt Ann, who is still living, and my mother Lisa who died in 1970. She and my dad, Jeff Justis, had four kids - me (Catherine), Jeff, Louisa and Kim.
I've lately become interested in my family history and would love to know more about the Mayo side of the family. I spent lots of time at Wisie's house in Holly Grove when I was growing up and fell very attached to the town. My other grandmother was born just 20 miles away in St. Charles. My roots are deep in east Arkansas...
It's nice to know of another relative out there. There must be lots and lots of them by now!
Ms. Fletcher, if Ms. Wilsie was your aunt, then you and I are also related.
Her father was the first cousin of my great grandfather. Cervena Barva Press has recently published a book I have written that includes the geneology of serveral lines the local Mayo family including Ms. Wilsie's line, as well as that of Oran Washington, and Ruth Dearing's mother.
In the other 1850's several Mayo brother's settled in Monroe County including the line traced to Ms. Wilsie.
If I can give you any further details, please feel free to contact me.
Wilsie Mayo Matthews, who died 10/22/1998, age 93, had a sister, Louise Rollow of Memphis. A sister, Gertie Vail buried in Macedonia Cememtry at Holly Grove. This information was listed 10/26/1998
Louise had two daughters, Ann, maybe living and Lisa, deceased in 1955.
You might want to go to http://.rhodes.edu/image/content/College_Catalogue/50.campus.pdf for more on the Rollow family and their contributions to Rhodes College, formerly Southwestern College in Memphis.
I think there may have been two brothers to Wilsie, Louise and Gertie.
