My second grade teacher, Mrs. Alpha Harris, was one of my favorites. I just remember having great fun in her class and that she was so cheerful and encouraging and always smiling. Her kind nature and way of teaching made me feel very special.
And, of course, there was no one else like my third-grade teacher, Virginia Rose Johnson (who taught several generations of HG residents!). She was gentle and firm all at once, and a wonderful story-teller. You did not cut up in her class. One day, however, for some unknown reason, I ended up tossing my shoe at a classmate in the next aisle, and my punishment was standing in the hall outside the classroom door. I was sooo embarrased (and so regretted letting Mrs. Johnson down with my behavior). I know for certain that my shoes stayed on my feet for the rest of the year!
Who could forget Winston W. Burks II? Even though I was in elementary school while he served as principal of HG high school (in the 60s), I always thought he truly looked, acted and spoke like the epitome of an intelliectual educator. He and his wife, Jennie Alderson Burks, are doing well and have retired and are living in Bedford, Va. Their oldest son, Win, married one of my best friends (Cathey Steiner of Marvell), and they also live in Bedford, so I hear updates from them.
