what about a community potluck/cookout for the first year? You could run an ad in the paper a month or so ahead of time and maybe get a few local stores and families involved to get the word out. It would be nice to have an all day outdoor event(weather permitting) and possibly a dance? They use the elementary school gym all the time for activities and since the high school has closed, that gym may be available. we had a bass and bream festival back in the late 80's I believe. We had a great turn out for it..Bill Clinton was the grand marshall of the parade. I was about 8-10 years old then, but I really enjoyed spending the day visiting with people in my home town. They had several activities back then..dunking booth, cake walk, kiddie games, ect. It would also be a great way to gather more info about HG and it's residents. It could be like a community fall festival. That way it would be cooler outside and that means less mosquitoes!!!!!!!!!
I think some sort of committee would have to be formed to help organize an event like this. We would definitely need some ideas about what to do. Maybe people just gathering for a picnic or fish fry would be enough of an event? Or should other events take place? And we would need people who still live in Holly Grove to be involved. If you have any ideas about how to create something like this or you have any ideas for possible "events" for a general reunion, please post them here.
Here are some questions and thoughts to consider: -Where should something like this be held? -How do you we get the word out about it? -money for food, utensils, plates, cups, paper towels, etc. - should the money be raised or donated? -Would this kind of event get a decent turnout? Would people like participating in it?
I'd be willing to assist with something like that. HG needs something to bring the community back together. Since the school is closing, we have no other way to connect the white and black community, other than chance meetings at stores, ect.
I would definitely need help planning something like that. It would take a pretty big group effort. Here are some ideas, though...I think fall would be a nice time. Maybe over a weekend in October? And what about having some kind of picnic and/or fish fry (depending on the weather)? I would think that if people were to gather for an entire weekend, then some other events should be planned as well...so, any other ideas?
Has anyone thought about having a non-school related Holly Grove reunion. I know that the African-American community has its annual Holly Grove Homecoming around July 4th, but has the community, as a whole, ever considered doing an annual Holly Grove get-together/reunion? I think it would be a lot of fun for people. Maybe a reunion in the fall when the temperature is pleasant.....
