Monroe County Citizen Feb. 9, 1928 HG Gleanings -Holly Grove defeated West Helena in a fast game of basketball on the local court one day recently. Crow and Guthrie were high scorers for the local team. J. Sylar was outstanding at guard, Jones and Hicks were outstanding stars for the visitors. The lineup of the teams was as follows: Holly Grove, H. Sylar (6), F., Guthrie (10), F., Gray (4), C., Lair (4), G., J. Sylar, G., West. Monroe County Citizen Feb. 23, 1928 HG Gleanings -Our boys won out in the basketball tournament Friday at Clarendon. They beat Brinkley, Clarendon, Shiloh, and Banner. They expect to go to Marianna Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for the district meeting. Play good ball boys, we are depending on you, and hoping you [have] all kinds of good luck. The players in the Holly Grove school are: Wallace Gray, Wayne Guthrie, James Sylar, Judson Crow, Ralph Lair, Van Wall, and Harvey Eugene Sylar.

December 22, 1955 Senior Teams Lose Two at Moro Tuesday The senior teams traveled to Moro Tuesday night to play their first double header on a foreign court. An exciting Pantherette game saw a 39-39 playoff tie; then a 44-44 playoff saw the Moro girls grab the first basket to win. The Panthers led the first quarter 13-10, but steadily fell behind this stronger Moro team." Hardwood Season Opened Friday with Brinkley "Both senior teams opened basketball season on the home court Friday against Brinkley. The Pantherettes won by a score of 51-31, but the Panthers came out on the losing end, with the score ending 49-32. The girls picked up an early lead, allowing the substitutes to play before the half. The boys scored first, but slowly fell behind. Brinkley led first period, 16-10, and increased that lead."
Monroe County Sun February 9, 1956 Lions Win 60 to 37 in Tuesday Game "Coach Rush Harding’s Clarendon Lions roared to a 60 to 37 victory over Holly Grove Tuesday night after the Clarendon girls had lost a thriller 40 to 39 on the home court. The boys took an early first quarter lead and were ahead 28 to 12 at halftime. Sonny Johnson was the offensive star for the Lions with Larry Steeland doing some fine defensive work to give Clarendon control of the ball on rebounds. Register played his usual steady game. They continue to show a fine team effort in posting the win. In the girls game Clarendon took an impressive lead but failed to score in the second period and trailed Holly Grove 22 to 13 at the halfway mark. In the fourth quarter the Lions closed the gap in the score and the last three minutes saw Holly Grove leading by only three points. Plumlee was high point maker with 26. Williams was high scorer for Holly Grove with 20."

Marion Newman, superintendent of the Holly Grove schools. They are: Holly Grove Senior boys A team at Forrest City, march 6,7, and 8; Senior boys B team at Parkin, March 6,7, and 8; Senior girls A team at Wynne on February 27, 28, and March 1; Senior Girls B team at Hughes on February 27,28, and March 1; and the Junior boys at Brinkley, February 27, 28, and March 1. A field and track meet will be held at Forrest City on April 26th."

"The Tigers were victorious over the Panthers by a score of 49 to 31. Larry Derrick was high point man for the Tigers with 17 points; McNeill was high point for Holly Grove with 14 points." "Although most of the point winners from last year have graduated, considerable interest is being shown." "The high spots on our schedule call for a meet in Little Rock on the night of April 20, with probably 30 teams entering; also a meet at Helena March 31. We also plan to have a meet here."
