Girl Scouts of Holly Grove Camp at East Lake
"The Girl Scouts of Holly Grove Troop No. 1, had a very pleasant overnight stay at McNeill’s Club House, August 28 and 29. This outing was sponsored by Mrs. McNeill and Mrs. Fred Johnson, leaders of the local troop.
The entire troop had a part in planning this overnight stay and each scout looked forward to it with much anticipation. By 2:30 Wednesday afternoon, bedrolls, equipment, food and sixteen smiling Scouts were loaded in a truck ready to go to East Lake.
Activities that were enjoyed by the entire group were swimming, boating, fire building, outdoor cooking, and games. Some of the girls are working on badges that will apply to them.
One of the outstanding features of this outing was the girls’ cooking their breakfast at the edge of the lake over fires built by themselves. In spite of the fact that all leaves and tender was damp, each group had a blaze started in a short while by using only two matches. If you had been passing by, the aroma of broiled meat, scrambled eggs, toast, and hot cocoa would have tempted you to linger a little longer, I am sure.
The lake was still and clear in the early morning and as we sat eating our breakfast on the sand, we each decided it was good to be scouting.
After supper on Thursday evening, dishes having been washed and club house straightened, we again climbed into our truck. We were all dirtier and a little more tired than when we arrived, but it was good to have been in the open and enjoyed God’s great out of doors. Each girl had done her chores well and cheerfully and it was a pleasure to take them. The Scouts who enjoyed this trip were Miriam Gann, Margaret Boals, Gloria Jean Johnson, Virginia June Johnson, Betty Jean Harrod, Martha Hill, Frances Williams, Shirley McNeill, Julia Hill, Earlene Skinner, Virginia Romines, Dorothy McCurley, Gladys Ruth Grimes, and Patsy Miller. Jere Sain and Betty Sue McNeill went along as Junior Counselors of the water front."
