Miss Virginia Calloway made a mean Chocolate Pie that she always brought to Potluck Suppers, the recipe was in the Holly Grove Methodist Church cookbook that I received a copy of when Dick and I married in August of 1968 and I have made a "million " over the last 38 years. Also, Miss Sally Phillips had a fabulous Coconut Cream Pie in that same recipe book and I have made my fair share of those as well. Mrs. Stone's Buttermilk Cake is still my daughter Hope's favorite cake as it was her Dad's (Dick Williamson) - it was always their birthday cake every year. I have a part of one that Hope made the other day sitting in my kitchen right now.
I wondered if visitors to the web site have memories they would share of food and favorite recipes associated with Holly Grove and its residents? What are some of the "signature" dishes you remember being prepared?
For instance, I recall my Mom noting that Georgia Sain was known as one of the first HG cooks to introduce the now-famous Green Bean Casserole (with onion crunchies on top) to the community. This would have been in the early or mid-60s.
My mother, Martha Dearing, also perfected her Chicken in a Jug recipe, and Hobo Hamburgers during my growing up days. She also created a mean dish of enchiladas (which I usually asked for on my birthday).
My grandmother, Faye Dearing, made the best chocolate and caramel fudge and divinity in the world every Christmas, and a luscious coconut cake.
My aunt, Ruth Dearing, still cranks out some of the best homemade cheesecake I've ever tasted.
