Hypopigmentation After Acne: Why These Light Spots Don't Always Fade

Hypopigmentation after acne shows up as pale or white patches where breakouts used to be. Unlike the redness or dark marks that typically fade within months, hypopigmentation happens when melanin production is disrupted in the healing skin leaving areas that are noticeably lighter than your natural tone.

This is different from textured acne scarring, like ice pick or boxcar scars, which involve physical depressions from collagen loss. Hypopigmentation is a pigment issue, not a structural one, and it's notoriously difficult to treat with topical products alone. Skin-lightening creams won't help, since the area already lacks pigment.

It's also worth knowing that hypopigmentation often appears alongside textured scarring, especially after deeper acne breakouts. In these cases, addressing the underlying scar tissue can sometimes improve the overall appearance of the skin, even if the pigment component requires separate attention.

If you're dealing with both pigment loss and depressed or pitted scarring, it helps to have an accurate diagnosis of what you're working with.
