Jean Sain, 76, real estate agent, died Friday, June 30, 2006, in Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Visitation was 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, July 5, 2006, from Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church in the church parlor. A memorial service followed at noon in the church sanctuary.

Born Nov. 9, 1929, in Holly Grove, Ark., she transferred her sophomore year to Ole Miss from Henderson State. She graduated from the University of Mississippi with honors and a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1951.

She was a member of Mortar Board, the Hall of Fame and was chosen Miss Ole Miss by her peers. Named “Most Versatile” by the Clarion Ledger/Jackson Daily News, she held offices in WSGA, Future Teachers of America, WAA, Mortar Board, ASB and the committee of 100.

A member of Kappa Delta Sorority, she served as president and member of the White Rose Society.

She received her master’s degree in physical education from the University of Florida in 1956. Beginning her professional career, she taught physical education first at Ole Miss and later at Millsaps College.

She started her second professional career in real estate practicing with Wilkinson Real Estate and later went on to form her own practice Jean Sain Realty, a practice she kept until her death.

A charter member of the Women’s Council of Realtors, she served as its first president. Subsequently, she was named Realtor of the Year by this group in 1979.

She was a charter member of River Hills Tennis Club and a member of the illustrious “B1” gang.

She was a charter member of the Jackson Cancer League and served as co-chair of its first major fund-raiser bringing all Mississippi Miss America’s together under one roof. She later went on to co-chair “A Wild Affair” honoring Mississippi sportsmen to benefit the league.

She chose the Cancer League as her main cause and plight having lost a brother and father to cancer. Along with Downs Syndrome, it was her main cause and focus.

She was a member of Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church and served in leadership positions on the Administrative Board, Trustees and Pastor Parish. She was a past member of the Aldersgate Sunday School Class. She served as executive board member of Holy Angel School in Shreveport, La. and a past board member of St. Mary’s School in Alexandria, La.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Sain; and one brother, J.B.

Survivors include one son, Jim Wilkirson of Jackson; one daughter, Leslie Jean of Shreveport, La.; three grandchildren; one brother, Thomas C. Sain of Hot Springs, Ark.

At her request, Sain’s remains went to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for Medical Research.

Memorials may be made to Holy Angel School, 10450 Ellerbe Road, Shreveport, LA 71106.

Jean Sain, 76, real estate agent and avid sportsman, died Friday, June 30, 2006, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, Miss.

Born Novemeber 9, 1929, in Holly Grove, Arkansas, she transferred her sophomore year to Ole Miss from Henderson State. She graduated from the University of Mississippi with honors and a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1951. She was chosen Miss Ole Miss by her peers, an honor that she held with high regard. She taught physical education first at Ole Miss and later at Millsaps College. She started her second professional career in real estate practicing with Wilkinson Real Estate and later went on to form her own practice, Jean Sain Realty.

She was an avid sports enthusiast with special interests in basketball, golf, tennis, fishing and rifle. She was a charter member of the Jackson Cancer League and served as co-chair of its
first major fundraiser bringing all Mississippi Miss America's together under one roof. She chose the Cancer League as her main cause and plight having lost a brother and father to cancer. Little did she know that one day she would be helping to pioneer a charity that would someday benefit her own life.

She was a member of Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Sain of Holly Grove, and a brother, J.B. She is survived by a son, Jim Wilkirson and his wife , Audrey of Jackson, and a daughter, Leslie Jean Wilkirson, a resident of Holy Angel School in Shreveport, La., and her grandchildren, Clarke, Hunter and namesake Fran Wilkirson. She is also survived by a brother, Thomas C. Sain and his wife, Georgia, of Hot Springs, Ark., and their children.

At her request, Sain's remains went to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for
medical research. Never faltering on her mission and always remaining positive, she has left behind a host of friends and family inspired by her courage and determination. Her request was that memorials, in lieu of flowers, be made to Holy Angel School, 10450 Ellerbe Road, Shreveport, LA 71106.
