The Doug Mayhue family of Holly Grove has been selected as Monroe County's 2007 Farm Family of the Year. The announcement was made this week by Monroe County Farm Bureau and the Monroe County Cooperative Extension Service.
Doug and his wife, Brenda, farm soybeans and corn. The couple have two children, Megan, age 22, who recently graduated from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro with a degree in pharmacy technology and currently lives in Searcy where she is an agent with Carlson Wagonlit Travel, and Cole, 19, who is a freshment at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro where he is majoring in physical therapy.
As the Monroe County Farm Family of the Year, the Mayhue family will join 74 other county farm families in vying for district and state recognition as the Arkansas Farm Family of the Year. The Arkansas Farm Family of the Year will be announced Dec. 7 at a banquet at C.A. Vines 4-H Center in Ferndale near Little Rock.
The Monroe County Sun will feature a special section honoring the Mayhues and their farming operation later this summer.
First established in 1947, Arkansas' Farm Family of the Year program is the longest running effort of its kind in the nation. The program sponsors are Arkansas Farm Bureau, Arkansas Press Association, Farm Credit Services of Western Arkansas, Farm Credit Midsouth, ACA, AgHeritage Farm Credit Services and Entergy, with the cooperation of the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency, USDA Rural Development, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Arkansas Department of Workforce Education.
