Monroe County Sun: Final Issue

I'm afraid this change in the newspaper situation in Monroe County will result in even less coverage of news and events in Holly Grove, which I don't think is a good thing for the community. Case in point: I received the inaugural June 1 issue of the Central Delta Argus-Sun and there was not a single word about the ongoing investigation of the multiple fires and vandalism in Holly Grove and the dismissal of the police chief. (Instead, we got reports of two 3-year-olds who had birthdays and a photo of 2-year-old beauty pageant winner with her six-foot trophy.) While I'm being cynical, I might as well also note that neither did the May 24 final issue of the Monroe County Sun have a single word about the troubles in Holly Grove. So ... what's new?-- Jane Dearing Dennis

by Tricia Rogers
Editor

Today's issue is the final issue of The Monroe County Sun. The Sun will be merging with The Brinkley Argus effective June 1. The two newspapers will combine to make The Central Delta Argus-Sun. The first issue of the two combined papers will be Wednesday, June 6.

The Monroe County Sun was established in Clarendon in 1874 and is the oldest newspaper in Monroe County. The Argus was first printed in 1875. One of the reasons for the merging of the two papers is the declining population of the county, said Katie Jacques, General Manager of the Brinkley Argus.

Clarendon, Holly Grove and Roe news will still be covered in the new Argus-Sun. Tricia Rogers will remain on the staff and will serve as co-editor along with Brinkley Argus co-editor Katie jacques. The Clarendon newspaper office will also remain open and Rogers will continue to cover area and local news as in the past. The only difference will be the articles and photos will be combined with the Brinkley area news and photos that are usually featured in the Brinkley Argus.

During this transition Sun subscribers are encouraged to renew their subscriptions at $25 per year. This offer will also be extended to Argus subscribers to renew their subscriptions for $25 per year, which is $10 less than the usual $35 Argus subscription. This offer will be good through August 31. Effective Sept. 1, the new subscription price for the Argus-Sun will be $35 per year for two weekly issues. Those with current subscriptions to either the Sun or Argus or both will continue to receive their papers. Subscription time will be extend to the one issue when the merger becomes effective.
