additional information: Banks brothers


The June 6, 2007, Central Delta Argus-Sun had a story about the car accident near Biscoe that killed the Banks brothers, formerly of Holly Grove. Detailed obituaries were also published. Additional information included:

-- The brothers were all natives of Holly Grove and were on their way to Cla-Clif Nursing and Rehab Center in Brinkley to pick up their brother, Robert J. Banks, to transport him to the Veterans Hospital in Little Rock for a weekly treatment.

-- All three brothers had made a career in the Arkansas National Guard and all had served in Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

-- They were the sons of Al Banks and Ireather Piggee-Banks of Holly Grove. They were raised and attended school in the Holly Grove community and were members of First Baptist Church of Pine City. Later, Emerson Banks joined Greater Rose Baptist Chuch in Little Rock; Larry Donnell and John Henry Banks were members of Charity Baptist Church in Little Rock.

-- Emerson Banks: an active member of the U.S. Army National Guard, 1977-1996. He worked as a Mobile Subscriber Equipment Systems Operator (wire systems installer) while in the military. He received several distinguished service medals, including Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forcees Reserve Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Marksman Badge Rifle and Army Reesrve Components Achievement Medal. He retired honorably as a disabled veteran.
He was a member of Mason Lodge No. 3 Solomon Temple Scottish Rite. He loved fishing, bowling, collecting caps, race cars, basketball, working out and especially traveling. He also loved spending time with his family and friends. Survivors are his wife, Gizor M. Endlow-Banks of Holly Grove, a daughter, two stepsons, three brothers, five sisters, two grandchildren and his mother.

-- Larry Donnell Banks: active member of the U.S. Army National Guard, 1976-2006. He worked as a mechanic and a wire systems installer. Recognition: Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Marksman Badge Rifle, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster. He retired honorably in 2006.
He was a quiet and gentle person. He was an avid sportsman. He loved fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed carpentry, lawn care and restoring cars. He also loved spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include his mother, three brothers, five sisters and a host of other relatives and friends.

-- John Henry Banks: active member of the U.S. Army National Guard, 1976-1999. He worked as a wire systems installer. Recognition: Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Marksman Badge Rifle, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster. He retired honorably in 1999.
He was a very outgoing person. He had a very comedic wit with everyone he met. He loved to laugh and tell jokes. He was an avid sportsman who loved fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed carpentry and restoring cars. He also loved spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include his mother, two daughters, three brothers and five sisters.

-- Burial was at Pine City Cemetery, with full military honors.

3 killed, 1 injured in I-40 accident in Arkansas

BISCOE, Ark. - Three people were killed and one was injured after a vehicle rear ended a car yesterday that had slowed down near construction on Interstate 40 in Prairie County. Arkansas State Police say the vehicle hit the back of a Honda, which hit the back of a Volvo. The Volvo then hit the rear of a truck that was stopped in the inside eastbound lane of I-40 near Biscoe.

Three people in the Honda were killed. They were identified as 55-year-old Emmerson Banks of Little Rock, the driver; 52-year-old John Henry Banks of Little Rock, and 53-year-old Larry Donnell Banks of North Little Rock.

Thomas Fleming, 38, of Memphis, the driver of the vehicle that hit the Honda, was injured and taken to a hospital in Stuttgart.

A four-vehicle accident Friday morning on Interstate 40 in Prairie County took the lives of three Little Rock residents.

According to a report from the Arkansas State Police Troop D, which is headquartered in Forrest City, the accident occurred just before 10 a.m. at the 203 eastbound mile marker on I-40 near Biscoe. The wreck involved a 1989 International truck driven by Oscar Stiger, 58, of Memphis; a 2006 Volvo driven by Curtis Shuman, 42, of St. Nicholas Christmas, Fla.; a 2003 Honda Pilot driven by Emmerson Banks, 55, of Little Rock, and a 2006 Kenworth truck driven by Thomas Fleming, 38, of Memphis.

According to the report, the truck driven by Stiger, the truck driven by Shuman and the van driven by Banks were stopped due to construction when the van was rear ended by the truck driven by Fleming, causing a chain-reaction accident. Banks and two passengers in his vehicle, John Henry Banks, 52, of Little Rock and Larry Donnell Banks, 53, also of Little Rock were killed. Fleming was transported to Stuttgart for treatment of injuries, and Stiger and Shuman escaped the accident without injury.

The accident happened about 10 a.m. Traffic was backed up for miles for several hours.

Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at the Holly Grove High School Gymnasium in Holly Grove. Burial will take place at the Pine City Cemetery by Branscumb Funeral Home of Brinkley, (870) 734-2772.
