In light of the discussion elsewhere on this Message Board regarding the HGHS property since consolidation with Clarendon, I thought it pertinent to post this news story which appears in the July 14, 2005, Monroe County Sun:
Board donates property to City of Holly Grove
By Deborah Owens, Staff Writer
Clarendon School board passed a resolution last week deeding the former Holly Grove High School property to the City of Holly Grove.
This transaction was decided on by school board members as a way to give back to the City of Holly Grove, said school board member Tina Wofford.
"The property was not going to be used by the Clarendon School district, so we all thought the city could use the property for something," Wofford said in a phone interview this week.
The decision to donate the property was made at the board's June 28 meeting. To meet legal requirements, the board sold the property to the City of Holly Gove for $10.
The City of Holly Grove is now accepting suggestions as to the new use for the property.
Holly Grove Mayor Lula Tyler, who is also Clarendon School board's secretary, made the school board's decision final after a short meeting of the board at the White River Cafe on Tuesday, July 5. Afterwards, Tyler signed Resolution No. 170, which deeded the property to the city, at Attorney Raymond Abramson's office in Clarendon.
Clarendon Schools Superintendent George LaFargue noted that all requests for school memorabilia, such as old Holly Grove football jerseys, etc., must be directed through the city since the property now belongs to them.
