During the late 1800's and early 1900's, a large number of Chinese immigrants settled in Arkansas Louisiana, and Mississippi. They opened grocery stores, dry cleaners, and restaurants in various small towns across these three states. Holly Grove was one of those small towns. Unlike Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana did not segregate Chinese Americans from the white community. Mississippi had schools segregated for blacks, whites, and Chinese.
This has been a rarely talked about event and I think it's more than important that the influence of Chinese Americans on small towns like Holly Grove be acknowledged. I'd love to learn more about the experiences of Chinese American families in Holly Grove. Where were your ancestors from and when did they come to America? What brought your families to Holly Grove? What were your viewpoints about growing up in predominantly white and African American cultures? Did you enjoy growing up and living in Holly Grove? Did your families continue Chinese traditions? Did you feel like you fit in at school?
I actually have a lot of questions and if anyone would be willing to talk to me, I'd really appreciate it. There's very little written about this (from what I can find) and I'd like to learn more.
