Bobbie Willingham Hill (Mrs. Square Hill) lived at the HG Teacherage. She still resides in Holly Grove and is a schoolteacher at Marvell Academy. I asked her about what it was like to live at the Teacherage. Here's what she shared with me:
I did live in the Teacherage from August 1966 until February 1967, when Square and I married. Eva Gamble (girl's basketball coach, chemistry teacher) and Mrs. Pearl Winans (librarian) and I lived there then. The Teacherage was furnished with twin beds, living room furniture, and kitchen appliances, table and chairs. We each had our own bedroom and shared the living, dining room, and kitchen. My bedroom had its own bathroom, and I think their bedrooms each had a bath also. Mrs, Winans went home every weekend -- she and her husband had a home south of town, down at Deep Elm. If I remember correctly, my first two years there a couple of other married teachers from the McCrory area lived there during the week and returned home for the weekend. They were elementary teachers, and I cannot remember their names at the moment.
I had rented an apartment from T.C. and Georgia Sain my first year in Holly Grove, then lived upstairs over the garage from Mrs. Janice Feldman the second year. I finally got smart that third year and moved into the teacherage because we could live there free of charge.
I don't remember having any "rules" or "manager," and I do not remember when it was torn down -- I do know it was there several years after I moved out. Eva, Mrs. Winans and I each supplied our own food and usually sat around the kitchen table together for our evening meal.
The teacherage was the old Trice house right across the street from where my grandmother lived, Minter Hix. Vida and Phil Trice, I believe were the owners of the house before the school took it over for single teachers to live because there was no housing in Holly Grove.
There was a house near the school where the single teachers once lived. Does anyone remember the house? When was it torn down? Did any of you live there as single teachers? Do photos of it exist?
