I remember ... well, as best as a 4 - 5 year old could remember ... that there was a tennis court just north of the main business district in Holly Grove and that it was a social center for the older kids in the late 40's (when I lived there). In the summer months the court would sometime see games almost all day long. I was too young to play and only got on the court one time ... when all the older kids were about worn out from playing. There was a donut shop in a store immediately South of the tennis court and it was frequented by the players between their turns to play. Just South of the donut shop was a store my mother calls "Preacher Riner's Store. My father, Hubert Riner Johnson, worked there.
I remember games of Kick the Can and Hide-and-Seek, mostly in front of T.C. and Georgia Sain's house on what we called "the block," where kids from all over congregated. Backyard basketball goals stayed busy all over town, as well as treehouses. I had a great playhouse that my dad and J.D. Walker made for me (as Santas) for Christmas about 1963. It had real windows, a pitched roof and a porch. It was a glorious place to play "house" and to imagine life as a "big person."
“I remember that we spent many hours playing on our carom/combination board. It was square with pockets at each corner. We would shoot the wooden caroms with our middle finger with quite a bit of force. If you didn’t shoot it just right, there was some pain in that shooting finger. We still have that board stored somewhere in our attic.” -Bob Lambert HGHS class of ‘47
Whether you were children or adults, what kind of games did you enjoy playing? My grandparents enjoyed bridge....and I know my grandfather liked dominoes.
