Masonic Lodge in Holly Grove

This history of the Masonic Lodge was provided by Annie Bobo Frazier in the Summer 1976, and documented by Martha King Dearing:

A loyal and dedicated group of citizens in Holly Grove organized the Masonic Lodge in 1890. They purchased a lot and built a hall. This building was located on Second Street, where the Andrew Williams blacksmith shop is now located. This was a two-story building. The first floor was used by Will Bobo for his funeral shop. The second floor was used as a meeting place for the Masonic Lodge.

With the coming of the Depression, lack of finance and the close of the funeral shop, the Lodge fell apart. The Lodge hall had to be sold.

About this time in the history of Holly Grove, there were other Lodges: the Sir Knights and Daughters, the House of Ruth, and the Pythian Lodges, who built halls where they could meet. The Pythian Hall was a large two-story building located on Third Street where the Archer Motor and Supply Co. is located at the present time. The Sir Knights and Daughters Hall was located on Second Street where Mrs. Ruth Love's home now stands. These Lodges went down with the Depression and the property had to go.

The Masonic Lodge had a large membership. Some of the members were Will Bobo, Jarrett Horn, R.H. Elliot, Dr. Sampson Collins, Span Shavers, Dan Dial Sr., William Cook, Prof. J.T. Cross, Zeek Coleman, U.S. Johnson, Thurston Campbell, Dave Banks, Nelson Jackson, Jasper Smith.

With the Pythian Lodge were Will Bobo, Thurston Campbell, Dr. Williams, Dr. Howard, JohnCook, Newton Brayboy, Tom Dawkins, George Doe, John Sims, Alec Johnson.

With the Sir Knights and Daughters were Will Smith, Sam Hobson, Robert Brittenum, Mack Brittenum, Robert Johnson, McKinley Cokes, McKinley Owington, Lewis Roberts, Will Brittenum, Sell Phillips, Fred Erwin Sr., Sylvester Wellington, Rev. Lowe, Dan Collins, Henry Jackson, C.A. Davis, Mann Wiley.

With the Eastern Star Lodge were Vera Roy Bobo, Lizzie Cross, Mary C. Elliot, Viola Johnson, Annie Weatherson, Mary Parrish, Nora Owington, B.B. Rivers, Sweet Cross, Britty Johnson, Molly Johnson.

These Lodges furnished recreational and social enjoyment for the members. The Pythian Hall was used for dances and in later years it was used by the City School Board for school. The Lodges had a good band for the adult citizens. They had parades and drill teams. We senior citizens remember Miss Tennessee Horton who was outstanding in her performance as marshall and directress. yes, those were the good old days for Holly Grove.
